With unrelenting population growth, the continued migration of people to cities, and the need to preserve our natural resources, the stress on our infrastructures has never been greater. Our infrastructures bind us – delivers our food to our cities, move us around, and even removes our waste. Our cities must become smarter, and we must be smarter about our cities. This means first knowing where and what infrastructures we have in our cities. Our transportation routes – trains and highways – must become safer as higher volumes of people are moved on the same routes.
The only way to prepare for the future is to understand in detail what exists today and then build or plan taking into account the parameters available to us – change over time and 3D views above and below ground. Levering new technologies, combining known technologies to make the world more visible, and using these technologies regularly over time is the way forward.
In this presentation, we will review the options around 3D digital capture technologies and how they have been applied to capture, measuring, and understand our infrastructures. From vehicle based systems to human wearable technologies, examples of digital realities will be explored. Only through digitising our infrastructures, we can make the informed decisions that make our future a reality.
