CCTV in conjunction with 3D measurements can help to secure a conviction.

On Christmas Eve in 2012, a man was walking to church in Sheffield to play the organ at Midnight Mass when he was set upon and beaten to death with a pickaxe handle. His attackers were seen running away and laughing as he lay fatally injured.

The suspects claimed they’d simply been walking behind the man; when they overtook him, a scuffle ensued and the man was accidentally killed.

However, a snatch of nearby CCTV footage showed first the victim and then the suspects walking along the road. By taking 3D measurements and using them to calculate the exact walking speed of the victim and suspects, West Yorkshire Police found that the suspects had initially been walking more slowly than the organist, and could not have caught up without a significant change of pace.

They concluded that the suspects must have deliberately accelerated from 3mph to 14mph – from a slow walk to a sprint – with no other motive than to viciously beat the organist. This showed intent; one suspect got a minimum of 25 years for murder while the other got 9 years for manslaughter.
