3D laser scanning for public safety professionals has made important strides towards the future. From crime scene mapping to traffic reconstructions or emergency management, never before has the investigator been able to capture scenes or solve cases with such levels of detail at a push of a button.

Up to 2 million of points per second – that is how fast the Leica RTC360 3D laser scanner captures any scene. The high-performance 3D laser scanner automatically pre-registers captured scan data in real time and in less than two minutes.

This state-of-the-art laser scanning technology is a game changer for public safety professionals who can benefit from the improvements of faster scanning, more detailed point clouds and software solutions to collect evidence or create situational analysis for investigations.

From CSI Effect to real solutions

Forensic science has been exaggeratedly portrayed on crime television shows and movies, highly influencing the public perception of advanced technologies used by public safety authorities. The emergence of the RTC360, developed by Leica Geosystems, brings this CSI Effect closer to reality.

Previously, it took a certain level of expertise to deal with 3D crime-scene and crash-scene data to create output that can be used by detectives and attorneys as evidence in the courtroom. Now, with the RTC360 3D reality capture solution, crime scenes can be captured in less than two minutes and pre-registered at the scene and quickly post-processed in the office with Leica Cyclone REGISTER 360 software.

The captured scan data is pre-registered in the field and displayed in real-time through Cyclone FIELD 360 mobile-device app, allowing users to quickly conduct on-site quality control checks of the scans. In addition, the RTC360 can complete a double scan, automatically removing the noise usually generated by moving people and vehicles through a scene.

The RTC360 3D reality capture solution together with the Cyclone REGISTER 360 office software empower public safety authorities to document and augment data in 3D. Thanks to this complete solution, investigators can access at any moment, even in years to come, highly-detailed virtual crime scenes, increasing planning and situational awareness.
