Executives at construction firms have been bombarded in recent years with calls for investment in a wide range of technologies, from laser scanning to drones to blockchain platforms. In an industry adept at understanding and analyzing decisions based on engineering and business risk, the fast-moving pace of the “tech stack” can make one’s head spin. In this presentation, you’ll get an introduction not only to the wide array of acronyms and concepts tossed your way, but also to some case studies in innovation from around the construction industry.
Participants will learn:
- What the technologies are all about, and the current state of play for each in construction
- How industry peers are applying these innovations to real-world business problems
- A framework for analyzing the “Return on Innovation” in your own firm
Speaker: Clair Vander Zwaag

Applying Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the field takes more than an iPad and some PDF Files. From stadium projects to residential foundations, BIM can easily be moved from the office to the jobsite for use with construction-oriented robotic total stations, and work in place can be verified using the same, or at scale using a wide range of reality capture solutions from point-and-shoot imaging devices, to laser scanners, to unmanned aerial systems. In this fast moving set of case studies, learn how contractors – of your size, in your markets, on your project types – have applied BIM directly in the field, at the point of construction.
Participants will learn:
WHY these technologies are applied,
HOW and WHEN to apply these technologies
WHERE they should these technologies used – and should be avoided.
The WHO… is you!

The use of 3D Laser Scanning in construction has taken off over the past several years, with an explosion of use cases from existing condition capture, to progress verification, to compliance checks and reports. This expanding landscape has been the result of innovation in software to consume and process point cloud data, and sensors that are ever more capable and affordable. Throughout this progression, however, has been a nagging challenge: scanning takes considerable time in the field – and even more time in the office – when collecting large amounts of data.
Participants will learn:
- How to accelerate data capture in the field with computer vision and edge computing
- How to provide a step change in speed to deliverable through a re-imagined relationship between field and office
- How to simplify exchange and analysis of data across technologies with consolidated data formats
Speaker: Troy Dahlin

When constructing roads, highways, railways and bridges, you choose the right equipment for the job. And recent advancements in technology have made it possible to optimize the planning and execution of your projects, and turned that equipment into a piece of the infamous “Internet of Things.” However, proprietary systems and data formats can make interoperability between these assets difficult at best – unless you apply an “open architecture” approach to your fleet.
Participants will learn:
- How heavy civil construction firms are achieving transparency on the jobsite, connecting machine operators, surveyors, and data preparation specialists
- How cloud-based collaboration tools allow firms to efficiently manage all connected construction projects, including multi-party platforms, and share job-related data with all stakeholders.
- How you can take an open approach to connecting platforms, bypassing the alliances between manufacturers that keep you trapped in proprietary systems

For the past few years, we have heard about the concept of a “Digital Twin”. Often associated with expensive manufactured products such as aircraft engines, a Digital Twin is defined as “a computerized (or digital) version of a physical asset and/or process.” Recently, the concept of a Digital Twin has entered the construction space, leaving executives wondering if this is the latest techie fad, or a lasting trend worthy of a time and resource investment.
Participants will learn:
- Why Digital Twin concepts are important both with the built asset environment, and in the construction business itself
- How technologies your teams are using – or are asking for – apply to Digital Twin concepts
- How to use your Digital Twin investments to achieve ROI for your firm and for your customers
