Groundworks: Leica MC1 ensures optimal foundations in housing projects

Author: Tobias Scharpenberg

Doing it right from the bottom up applies in many cases, especially in the construction industry. Groundwork and the proper execution of foundations are crucial for structural stability and longevity in house building, as they form the essential base that supports the entire structure. Effective execution requires precision, high-quality materials, and skilled staff, all while managing weather impacts. Technology helps to minimise human error, reduce material waste, and speed up project timelines, leading to cost savings, improved overall outcomes and safety on-site.

Established in 2003, C3 Construction Limited has grown to become one of the leading groundwork and civil engineering contractors in the Midlands of England. Their expertise and offerings encompass a wide range of construction-related activities for national housebuilders and commercial clients. To ensure industry-leading standards, digital solutions play a key role in the company's client-focused approach. Knowing that laying a strong and precise foundation is paramount to success, they equipped multiple heavy machines with machine control.

The introduction of this advanced technology has revolutionised the workflow for preparing house foundations. It not only ensures accuracy but a level of precision that guarantees the structural integrity of the entire project. Homeowners benefit from knowing their home's foundation is built on a solid, precisely executed base, contributing to the overall resilience and longevity of the structure.

Supporting machine operators, relieving surveyors

With 20 years of experience, excavator operator Alex James is an expert in digging foundations. However, his workflow has changed in the last three years since using the machine control solution, Leica MC1, from Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon, and the cloud-based collaboration tool Leica ConX. “It pretty much changed our lives,’’ says Alex. “The productivity increase is second to none. We can get twice as much work done in half the time.”

“The Leica MC1 eliminates the need for traditional pins and lines when digging foundations. The surveying engineers don’t have to come out on-site anywhere near as much. We get sent the models via Leica ConX and can work straight away.”

After the initial survey of the construction site, the engineers create the 3D models in the office and send them via Leica ConX to the dedicated machines. After a quick synchronisation, the MCP80 panel displays the latest models, and Alex can start operating. Guided by GNSS, real-time cut/fill indications eliminate the need for constant manual measurements and staking. This process minimises the travel time and staff on-site, resulting in less idle time and increased safety.

Equipped with the 3D machine control solution and a tilt rotator, he is empowered to grade the uneven ground and dig the foundations without leaving his machine or worrying about people in the vicinity.

Benefiting all stakeholders

The Leica MC1 machine control solution is revolutionising construction processes by enabling unparalleled accuracy in digging and grading. This advanced technology boosts productivity and quality control, enhancing efficiency and safety on construction sites. Ensuring the foundations are laid precisely to design specifications results in significant cost savings, higher-quality outcomes, and increased client satisfaction.

A well-built foundation provides homeowners with peace of mind, long-term value, and reduced maintenance costs. Ultimately, meticulous groundwork and foundation work lay the essential base for a resilient and lasting home, benefiting all stakeholders involved.
