Az ATHENA betűszó a Leica Geosystems „Advanced Technology for Higher Education and Non-profit Associations”, vagyis a „speciális technológia a felsőoktatás és a civil szervezetek segítése érdekében” kifejezés angol elnevezésének kezdőbetűiből áll össze. A program világosan megfogalmazott célja a legújabb GNSS-referenciaállomás és monitoring technológia megismertetése a felsőoktatási intézményekkel és a kutatói közösségekkel.
