Gotthard Base Tunnel, world’s longest and deepest rail tunnel, benefits from Leica Geosystems
Surveying consortium VI-GBT drilled a 57 kilometre long tunnel from both sides and met in the middle with a deviation of only 8 centimetres or 3.1 inches, whereas 25 centimetres or 9.8 inches would have been tolerated. Surveyors captured this engineering marvel by repeating surveying and measuring tasks every 400 meters, ensuring the tunnel was precisely on course.
