Introducing the new Scanner Live Position feature in Cyclone FIELD 360

Gerhard Walter talks about the latest feature in the mobile-device app

Let the innovative VIS Technology guide you from one setup to the next by using the new Scanner Live Position feature in Leica Cyclone FIELD 360

While scanning with the Leica RTC360 Reality Capture Solution, users can operate their laser scanner and perform on-site point cloud pre-registration, straight from any iOS or Android device through the Cyclone FIELD 360 mobile-device app. With its intuitive user interface, and immediate data visualisation, the Cyclone FIELD 360 app allows users to quality control their scans directly in the field.

In complicated environments it is often difficult to spot scan shadows and find the ideal place for an additional setup to be taken. Also, in scenarios with repetitive structures one can easily get lost to know what was already scanned. With automatic pre-registration in the field thanks to Visual Inertial System (VIS) Technology, the RTC360 reduces the complexity and the time of your office work. High-quality point clouds become immediately available for your design work.

VIS Technology was developed to decrease the time spent on stitching together the individual point clouds into one complete point cloud. The system is based on five cameras built in to the RTC360 to track the environment. These cameras pick up on environmental features and use them as reference points to connect individual scans. When moving from one place to another, even between floors, the RTC360 knows the relative position between any two scans and automatically registers the different point clouds into one complete point cloud.

With the latest update of the field software app, this world’s-first innovative VIS Technology is instantly and live available on the tablet in Cyclone FIELD 360, maximising the user benefit of the VIS Technology feature of the RTC360.

With the new feature, the current scanner position is always plotted in the Map view of the app and guides the user where to put the next setup when using the RTC360 scanner together with a tablet computer running FIELD 360.

Existing (and new) RTC360 users can now benefit from seeing their scanner position relative to the previous setup. Displaying the live scanner position increases overall productivity helping users to:

  • Switch on Live Position to view current scanner position
  • Find the ideal position for the next scan
  • Avoid holes in the overall scene
  • Avoid unscanned areas

Once all scans are checked and registered through Cyclone FIELD 360, it is synchronised back to the RTC360 3D laser scanner, which records the data on an USB stick and after plugging it into a computer, the post-processing can start with Cyclone REGISTER 360 post-processing office software.

This revolutionary 3D reality capture solution simplifies workflows and opens opportunities for new businesses. The field mobile-device app is an important part of the overall workflow and continuous improvements are done to embed customer feedback and to further improve system productivity. Continuous improvements of the mobile-device app are made based on customer needs and feedback from the market.
