Hexagon releases geospatial data of Tokyo

Hexagon releases geospatial data of Tokyo, comprising orthophotos, LiDAR point clouds and 3D city models

The Tokyo data set includes orthophoto imagery at 7.5 cm resolution, a LiDAR point cloud with >30 pts/m2 point density and a fully textured object-based 3D city model including over 1.7 million structures at LOD2 (level of detail 2) across the entire 750 km2 coverage area.

“Based on the success of the Tokyo Metro pilot, Hexagon plans to expand both urban and wide-area coverage in Japan in collaboration with our private sector airborne survey partners”, says Yuji Kuwano, Business Manager Asia Pacific Region for Geospatial Content Solutions at Hexagon.

With its first content collection in Asia, Hexagon continues to expand the coverage area of the HxGN Content Program and increases the resolution and data set options beyond its market-leading digital orthophoto coverage of >25 Million km2 across the USA, Canada, and Europe, now in its third refresh cycle. The additional data stack is a direct response to the increasing demand for geospatial data via OGC compliant, web-enabled streaming service, which complements hard copy deliveries for customers who host data on their own IT infrastructure.

Cutting-edge sensor technology and expanding geographic markets

The Tokyo pilot project was captured with Leica Geosystems’ CityMapper-2 airborne hybrid oblique imaging and LiDAR sensor. The system simultaneously captures orthophotos in RGB and NIR, oblique images and LiDAR point clouds, providing correlating data sets across the entire stack. The data acquisition was completed by Kanko (Osaka, Japan), the first private sector aerial survey firm in Japan to acquire a CityMapper-2 system.

“Tokyo is one of the most densely populated areas in terms of structures, land types and data volume. We specifically chose to survey a challenging area to continue validating the market-leading capabilities of the CityMapper-2 sensor”, Kuwano adds. “We are very satisfied with the results and the CityMapper-2 meets all our expectations. The sensor provides the highest data quality for any projects, even in the toughest urban environments.”

Hexagon drives digitisation across the world by continuously expanding its coverage area. The Tokyo data set meets the ever-increasing demand for high-precision (resolution and absolute ground accuracy) geospatial information. The main applications include but are not limited to autonomous driving high-definition base maps, real estate management, municipal stakeholder applications, 5G telecom network planning and engineering, civil protection such as flood plain simulations and emergency response applications.
