Leica DMC-4 airborne sensor made debut for 2023 flight season with APEI

The new Leica DMC-4 large format airborne imaging system was successfully deployed by APEI (Aero Photo Europe Investigation) for the 2023 flight season.

APEI, a key player in the aerial mapping industry in France and a loyal Leica Geosystems customer, chose the new Leica DMC-4 to respond to an ever-increasing demand for high-resolution and high-quality aerial imagery to generate photogrammetric and reference geospatial data.

With over 31,000 pixels across swath, the Leica DMC-4 delivers superior image fidelity, improving the collection performance by 20% compared to previous systems. The solution leverages Leica MFC150 imaging camera module and the unique mechanical FMC (forward-motion-compensation) technology, already implemented in all of Leica Geosystems' airborne systems since the introduction of Leica CityMapper-2, to provide the most accurate photogrammetry imagery in all lighting conditions.

APEI benefits from the performance improvements of the DMC-4 to significantly increase their productivity, even for projects which require high resolution and 80% forward overlap, while offering their customers aerial imagery of very high radiometric and geometric quality. In addition, with the DMC-4 processing in HxMap’s common sensor environment and workflow, APEI swiftly adapted to the new technology and was ready by the start of the 2023 flight season.

"The DMC-4’s image quality and performance, even for reduced building lean requirements, surpass our expectations and those of our customers” said Bruno Callabat director at APEI. “Getting started with the new DMC-4 system was quick and easy, due to Leica Geosystems’ common sensor environment and workflow. Together with the Leica CityMapper-2 and the Leica TerrainMapper, the DMC-4 completes and renews our sensor fleet to offer our customers the full spectrum of products – from LiDAR data to oblique and large format imagery – for the production of all types of geospatial data”. "

“With the DMC-4, we have successfully addressed our customers' demand for an efficient and versatile large-format imaging solution. Leveraging our experience with CityMapper-2, we have combined the MFC150 camera modules in a large-format sensor optimised for all types of photogrammetric productions, from stereo plotting to 3D extraction to orthophoto production." said Layton Hobbs, Product Line Director for Airborne Solutions at Hexagon. "APEI has put their trust in our imaging, LiDAR, and hybrid airborne product line. We have built a solid working relationship with them, and there's no better customer to debut the DMC-4 for the new season.”
