Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (BPA)

Crime-Scene Applications of 3D Scanning Technology

3D point-cloud data can help to determine bloodstain origins more rapidly and reliably than ever before.

The bloodstain pattern workflow within Leica Map360 is a reliable method for calculating areas of origin for bloodstain pattern analysis.

The workflow offers a virtual ‘stringing’ technique, releasing CSIs from having to conduct lengthy and cumbersome physical stringing at the scene. It removes the risk of human error in terms of hand measurements, calculations, and the placement of physical strings.

How is it done?

  • Adhesive targets are placed on all affected surfaces
  • High-resolution photographs are taken of the scene
  • A laser scanner collects 3D measurements at the scene within seconds
  • Photos and 3D measurements are precisely aligned using the adhesive targets
  • Based on their shape, each bloodstain’s trajectory is mapped in 3D space
  • Each bloodstain can then be traced back to its origin

What are the benefits?

  • Removes risk and ambiguity
  • Faster results with greater accuracy
  • Less contamination of the scene
  • Less tedium for CSIs
  • Faster release of the scene and the CSI
  • Infinitely repeatable data if later analysis is needed
  • More reliable evidence for use in court
