3D measurements + CCTV footage can identify, confirm or dismiss suspects.
Following a series of armed robberies in Leeds, three suspects were repeatedly caught on CCTV. However, their faces were covered; they left no prints; and mobile phone data was inconclusive
By combining CCTV footage with 3D measurements from laser scanners, West Yorkshire Police found that the suspects must measure 5’4”, 5’11” and 6’5”. Percentile height charts for the British population showed that the chances of these suspects not being the same in each case was millions to one.
Although the suspects had refused to be measured, this new evidence led to arrests – and measurements could be taken in custody. Their heights were found to be very close to the calculated estimates, providing evidence for use in court.
