When you think of motocross, you probably imagine roaring engines, flying dirt, and high-speed jumps. But behind the scenes, creating a world-class motocross track is no easy feat. It’s a job that demands precision, efficiency, and a whole lot of earthmoving. For Fratelli Gemignani, a family-run heavy construction company specialising in earthmoving, this challenge was tackled head-on with the help of Leica Geosystems’ machine control technology.

 

Meet the Team: Fratelli Gemignani

Enrico Mignani, the third-generation leader of Fratelli Gemignani, explains: "Our company has been around since the days of horse-drawn carts, started by my grandfather. Today, we’ve evolved into a modern operation with cutting-edge machinery and machine control systems from Leica Geosystems."

With a team of 10-11 employees (depending on the season), Fratelli Gemignani is no stranger to complex projects. But the Zero4 Park motocross track, owned by MotoGP legend Andrea Dovizioso, presented a unique challenge.

The Challenge: Building Precision in Dirt

The project involved modernising the Monte Coralli motocross circuit into a 1,750-meter track with 24 jumps. As Enrico puts it: "From the start, we knew that without GPS technology, managing this project would have been incredibly complicated." 

The team was handed a 2D design, which Enrico transformed into a 3D model. The 3D design incorporated every detail—elevation curves, jumps, and track edges. The goal? Move 55,000 cubic meters of dirt in just one month while ensuring the track met the razor-sharp precision required for motocross safety and performance.

The Solution: Leica Geosystems’ Machine Control Technology

Using Leica Geosystems machine control technology, the team uploaded the 3D model to their bulldozer and excavator. These machines became the stars of the show, equipped with GPS guidance to ensure every cubic meter of earth was moved with pinpoint accuracy.

"We managed to move 55,000 cubic meters of dirt in just one month," Enrico shares. "Without the GPS system, I’d say it would’ve been impossible."

This wasn’t Fratelli Gemignani’s first rodeo with Leica Geosystems technology. Six years ago, they installed their first GPS system to profile a 4-kilometer canal. The results were so impressive that they’ve since outfitted six machines with Leica Geosysems machine control solutions.

The Zero4 Park project was completed on time and to perfection. The track’s 24 jumps and intricate geometry met the high standards required for motocross. The GPS technology not only saved time but also reduced rework and material waste—a win-win for both the project timeline and the bottom line.
