Leica Geosystems‘ 2016 Plan Contest Awards showcase state-of-the-art reality capture deliverables
The 2016 awards were presented in four categories: Buildings/Heritage, Civil/Survey, Plant/Marine, and Building Construction. A panel of five qualified judges evaluated 17 entries based on the completeness and usefulness of the plans, the creative use of point clouds and models, and overall appearance. The first- and second-place winners in each category are as follows:
Buildings/Heritage
First Place: Delta Engineers, Architects & Land Surveyors, PC, Vernon, NY - Roxbury Mansion
Delta used two Leica ScanStation C10 laser scanners to document the interior and exterior of Roxbury Mansion in the Catskill Mountains with the goal of digitally preserving the building as it stands today while also providing engineering and architectural services for future expansions. Delta used Leica Cyclone to register and process the point cloud data, and Leica TruView to share the data with the owner and in-house modelers.
Second Place: National Park Service, Washington, D.C. - Ellis Island
For a multiyear effort focused on rehabilitating and interpreting the historic buildings of Ellis Island, which were damaged during 2012’s Hurricane Sandy, the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) Heritage Documentation Program (HDP) has used a Leica ScanStation 2, Leica ScanStation C10, and now a Leica ScanStation P40 to capture highly accurate, comprehensive data across the 30-building, 1 million square foot site. Leica Cyclone has been the backbone of data processing for photo-texturing and registration of years’ worth of HDS data, controlled in a survey network, while Leica CloudWorx for AutoCAD is used to create line drawings derived from the point cloud data sets that will be archived and publicly accessible within the Library of Congress.
Civil Survey
First Place: Urban Systems Survey Inc., Edmonton, AB, Canada - Condominium Development
Using a Leica ScanStation P20, Urban Systems scanned the site of a potential condominium development to create a topographic site plan. The company used Cyclone 9.0 to register and clean the data and model the adjacent buildings, fences, power poles and guy wires, and used Leica CloudWorx for Civil 3D to finish all modeling and drafting.
Second Place: Olsson Associates, Omaha, NE - Children’s Hospital
Olsson used Leica ScanStation solutions to scan and model a children’s hospital building.
Plant/Marine
First Place: Allnorth Consultants, Saskatoon, SK, Canada - Vessel Removal
Allnorth used a Leica ScanStation P20 to document the removal path of four large vessels slated for replacement, as well as to identify the structural, piping and other mechanical components that would need to be removed as part of the project. The company used Leica Cyclone for point cloud processing and Leica TruView to enable the clients to view and interact with the data over the course of the multiyear project.
Second Place: Delta Engineers, Architects & Land Surveyors, PC, Vernon, NY - Upstate Shredding
Using two Leica ScanStation C10 laser scanners, Delta scanned the site of an automobile shredder for an expansion and renovation project. The company registered and processed the scans using Leica Cyclone and shared the data with the client through Leica TruView.
Building Construction
First Place: Delta Engineers, Architects & Land Surveyors, PC, Vernon, NY - Utica Auditorium
Delta used two Leica ScanStation C10 laser scanners to document the auditorium for structural assessment. The company used Leica Cyclone to register and process the point cloud data and Leica TruView to share data with the client.
Second Place: James G. Davis Construction Corporation (DAVIS), Rockville, MD - Uline Arena
DAVIS used a Leica ScanStation C10 laser scanner to capture existing conditions of an office/retail redevelopment known as Uline Arena. The company then used a Leica Nova MS50 MultiStation to scan select areas, including the historic Ice House façade, as well as to perform construction verification throughout the project lifecycle. All point cloud data was processed through Leica Cyclone software. Using Leica Cyclone and Leica Cloudworx for AutoCAD, the DAVIS team created a plan that showed the relationship of the existing structure to the design.
Popular Vote to Open 1 July
A new award category this year, the popular vote will take place on the Leica Geosystems Facebook page through the month of July. Visitors can browse all of the entries and vote for their favorites by selecting “Like.” The entry with the highest number of likes on 1 August will receive an award for best all-around plan.
